BASIS Installation Guide For Microsoft Windows Operating Systems

For BBj-specific information, see Installing BBj - Windows 98/Me/NT 4.0/2000/XP. Note that installing BBj on a computer running Windows 2000 requires approximately 26 MB of permanent hard disk drive space and 16 additional MB of temporary hard disk drive space. When the installation is completed or cancelled, it removes the temporary space and retains a single directory with a 35 KB file named remove.exe.

Process Description

Visual PRO/5, PRO/5 Data Server for Windows, and the BASIS ODBC Driver revision 2.10 and higher use FLEXlm/FLEXnet licensing software. This online documentation includes the FLEXlm/FLEXnet End User and is accessible from the table of contents. In addition, the Macrovision Web site (www.macrovision.com) contains Adobe Acrobat and fully searchable versions of the current manuals.

The installation processes for these BASIS products include:

Procedures for obtaining an emergency license in the event of an emergency are also included.

What You Will Need

Part 1: BASIS License Manager Installation (Multiuser)

The BLM is distributed on CD and from the Internet. BASIS licensing information is contained on the License Registration Form included with your BASIS product or by fax.

Insert the CD into the drive, or if you are downloading the BLM from the BASIS ftp site, unzip the self-extracting file into a temporary directory.

Run setup.exe to begin the installation. At the end of the installation process, the License Registration Wizard will start. The Wizard can also be started from the Windows Start button. Select Register for a BASIS License.

Registering for the Permanent Multiuser License(s)

To request a permanent multiuser license, use the License Registration Wizard to specify license registration, product license, registration method, and license delivery method. The License Registration Wizard starts automatically after product installation. The License Registration Wizard can also be started from the Windows Start button.

  1. Select Register for a License to display the Register for a BASIS License dialog.

image\licreg01.gif

  1. To register for a license, select the Register for a license option. To register for an evaluation license, select the ‘Check this box to receive an evaluation license’ option. If you have already received an evaluation license, select the ‘Install a license’ option. If you already have a license that is being served by a BASIS License Manager (BLM), select the ‘BASIS License Manager’ option.

image\licreg02.gif

  1. Enter the information listed in the Contact Information section. (This information is optional, unless the license is delivered by fax or e-mail.) This information is only used if an e-mail or fax transmission error occurs. Check the box ‘This is a notebook computer’ if installing the license on a notebook computer.

  2. In the Product Information section, enter the serial number and license authorization number exactly as they appear on the License Registration Form that came with your BASIS product.

  3. Optionally, enter a host name to associate a product serial number and host ID with an individual computer.

  4. The default Host ID is generated and displayed for the machine. Use the Redundant License Format in the HostID field to request a redundant license.

  5. When registering for an evaluation license, enter the number of users in the User Count field. Otherwise, the User Count field is disabled.

  6. Click Next to display the License Registration and Delivery Methods dialog.

image\licreg03.gif

  1. For Automatic licensing available in (V)PRO5/ 4.10 and higher and BBj 3.01 and higher only, select ‘Register and license automatically.’ This method automatically completes the license registration and installation process; it is the fastest, and therefore, preferred method. If this option is not selected, skip to Step 10.

Automatic

Register and license automatically using HTTP protocol via sockets. This option disables all other licensing options.

  1. Under Registration Method, select Web Browser, Email To, Telephone, Fax, or Other to send the license information to BASIS.

Web Browser

The license request is automatically sent to BASIS by browser.

E-mail To

The license request is automatically sent to BASIS by e-mail. If you are working on a machine that does not have e-mail capability, you must select another method. If you are at a remote site that tends to experience delays in delivering e-mail, you may experience the same delay with the licensing process. In this situation, try registering by fax as well.

Telephone

This is an automated telephone registration system. Dial +1.505.338.4171 and follow the instructions. Fax capability is required for the automated system to return a permanent license.

Fax

This method saves the licensing information to a text file in a format for BASIS automatic fax-reading software. The text file can also be printed and faxed to +1.505.338.4178. The fax must be sent right side up, inserting the top edge first. Increase the size of the characters as much as possible (16-point type is the minimum) without the text running outside the margins or onto a second page. Clean, enlarged photocopies can be used, but any marks, streaks, or handwritten notes on the page make it difficult for the automated system to read the file.

Other

This is a manual backup if the e-mail and fax methods are unavailable or fail. Save the registration information to a file, and move it to another machine with printer access or e-mail. Fax the information to +1.505.345.5082 (NOT our automated fax number) or e-mail the file to license@basis.com and BASIS will manually generate a permanent license.

  1. If you selected E-mail To: as the registration method, indicate how BASIS should return the license file. Include your complete e-mail address or fax number. This method can be different than that specified in Registration Method.

  2. Click OK to verify the registration information.

  3. Click Next to continue.

If you selected E-mail Address or Fax Number in the Registration Method section but did not enter your name and telephone number in the Contact Information section, an Emergency Contact Information dialog will appear as shown below. This information is required and is only used if an e-mail or fax transmission error occurs.

  1. Save As dialog appears when Other is selected as the registration method. Enter the destination path for the registration file, and click Save. Move the registration file to a machine with Internet or printer access. E-mail the file to BASIS for an immediate reply, or print the file and fax it to BASIS during BASIS' normal operating hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mountain Standard Time (-0700GMT). A permanent license will be returned by the selected method.

  2. If after 30 minutes you have not received a permanent license, use the remaining delivery methods. If you still do not receive a permanent license, install the emergency license printed at the bottom of the BASIS License Registration Form until you receive the permanent license.

  3. After registering for a license, a dialog appears to register for another BASIS license. If you have more than one BASIS product to license, answer Yes to repeat the process. Otherwise, answer No, and an instruction dialog will appear to install the license.

  4. If you are receiving a license by e-mail or the Web, save the file according to the accompanying instructions. If you are receiving information by fax, specific license installation instructions are printed on the faxed form. Click Next to continue. To install the license, select Yes.

Part 3: Alternate Licensing Procedures

Emergency – 7-Day Nag-Free License

A 7-day emergency license is available for system hardware changes that invalidate your license.

To install a 7-day emergency license, repeat the steps in Part 2. When entering additional requests for the same serial number and authorization number, our automated system generates a 7-day emergency license. Once the 7-day emergency license is running, call the BASIS reseller to request a permanent license.

Evaluation – 60-Day Nag-Free License

If, when installing new BASIS product, the "License Registration and Delivery Methods" procedures fail for any reason to return a permanent license  you can immediately run nag-free by installing an evaluation license. This license is valid for 60 days from the date of purchase from BASIS, and you do not need to contact BASIS to install it.

To install a 60-day evaluation license, repeat the steps in "Product Installation." Manually enter the license information on the included License Registration Form. Once the 60-day evaluation license is running, call BASIS support to assist in the installation of the permanent license.

Part 4: Licensing Terms

License Manager

A FLEXlm/FLEXnet term for the application that tracks the number of counted licenses in a network and which machines in the network are using those licenses at any one time. A license manager coordinates the issuing of these licenses to requesting clients at any given moment. See BASIS License Manager.

BASIS License Manager

BASIS' version of the FLEXlm/FLEXnet license manager. The BLM software may be installed on the same server as the product(s) or on a dedicated license server machine. In the FLEXlm/FLEXnet manual, available in our online documentation at www.basis.com, the BLM is what FLEXlm/FLEXnet calls a "vendor daemon." See License Manager.

Counted license

A FLEXlm/FLEXnet term for a type of license that is tied to the computer running a license manager, such as the BLM, in a network. The license manager manages the use of counted licenses as they are needed throughout the network. BASIS sells counted licenses as "multiuser" licenses because the same license can "float" and be used by more than one UNIX terminal or Windows seat in a network. PRO/5 and the PRO/5 Data Server are sold only with counted licenses and, therefore, require the BLM.

Uncounted license

A FLEXlm/FLEXnet term for a type of license that is tied to the computer running the BASIS product. This license does not require a license manager because it is fixed to a unique seat (the machine running the BASIS product) and cannot be used by any other machine in a network. BASIS sells uncounted licenses as "single-user" licenses because the license can only be used by this unique Windows seat.

Unlicensed (nag) mode

If a BASIS product cannot find a valid license, it displays a screen reporting the problem every 15 to 30 minutes. Users can continue to work when the product is in "nag mode." Emergency licenses are available that do not show this screen; see Part 3: Emergency Licensing Procedures.
