Windows Clients appear to hang during file access
When running Visual PRO/5 on a Windows network, it's possible for the clients to temporarily hang during file I/O. This can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, at which point the workstation will resume normal operation.
In the past we've had problems reported (and experienced in-house) with Windows networks that utilized NetBEUI.
The symptom was that even though many users may have a file open simultaneously, only one user had read/write access to it at a time. So, if you and I both opened the file but I started to do a bunch of reads from the file for a report, you would appear to hang until I stopped reading the file. So, if I was reading thousands of records, you would hang on any I/O to that file (including an open, which you can't break out of) for a long period of time.
With TCP/IP or IPX/SPX, no one user gets sole access to a file like with NetBEUI. With that protocol, I'd be able to read a few records, then you would, then I would, etc. Therefore, we'd recommend using TCP/IP or IPX/SPX for mapping drives.
