Technical Communique BASIS International
Date:  January 19, 2004
Subject:  BBj 3.03 Now Available
Number:  TC-04001

BASIS continues to enhance the BBj® product line by providing major feature releases during the first quarter of each year. BASIS plans to release BBj 4.0 on March 29, 2004. Throughout the year, BASIS releases periodic maintenance versions of the product. These new versions contain bug fixes and partially implemented features for the next major revision of the product. The online documentation describes these features as "supported" in the next major revision number of the product.

The new BBj feature preview policy gives the BASIS development community an opportunity to see, use, and comment on upcoming features well in advance of the features becoming a permanent part of the product. This allows the BASIS development community to participate in the design and implementation process of their development language.

BBj 4.0 Features Previewed in BBj 3.03

The following list contains BBj 4.0 features added since BBj 3.02:

  1. BASIS IDE Enhancements - Include two new features; a file module and a data dictionary module. The file module provides a graphical view of the file header and keys, and a file record view in both hexadecimal and ASCII. The data dictionary module contains all of the features formerly available in DDBuilder® and Enterprise Manager, plus many more.

  2. Popup Menu - Allows global use across all controls in a program, giving developers the ability to develop a common popup menu only once and reuse it as often as needed.

  3. Automatic License Updates - Provides developers with the ability to update programmatically the license running on the computer hosting the BASIS License Manager (BLM). This facilitates the software rental model by minimizing customer interaction.

  4. Silent Installation - Facilitates an automated installation process, requiring no interactive user input. Developers can automate and consolidate BASIS software with their application installation. This feature gives the developer greater control resulting in a more dependable installation process.

For additional details on these and other upcoming features, go to the index in the BBj 3.03 documentation and type BBj 4.0 or log in to the BBj-Developer newsgroup and become a part of the creative development effort. We hope you enjoy being a part of this innovative process. BASIS appreciates your feedback and acknowledges that the BBj product suite benefits from your contributions.

Resolved QA Memos

BBj 3.03 resolves a number of bug fixes and quality assurance (QA) memos that detail known issues with previous product releases. Most notably, this release features a new and improved SYSPRINT implementation and eliminates the mysterious and random double console anomaly and the occasional runaway processes introduced with the 1.4.2 Win32 JRE.
