Technical Communique BASIS International
Date:  September 8, 2003
Subject:  BBj 3.02 Now Available
Number:  TC-03005

BASIS continues to enhance the BBj product line by providing major feature releases during the first quarter of each year. BASIS plans to release BBj 4.00 on April 5, 2004. Throughout the year, BASIS releases periodic maintenance versions of the product. These new versions contain bug fixes and partially implemented features for the next major revision of the product. The online documentation describes these features as "supported" in the next major revision number of the product.

The new BBj feature preview policy gives the BASIS development community an opportunity to see, use, and comment on upcoming features well in advance of the features becoming a permanent part of the product. This allows the BASIS development community to participate in the design and implementation process of their development language.

BBj 4.00 Features Previewed in BBj 3.02

The following list contains a subset of the upcoming BBj 4.00 feature set:

  1. BASIS IDE Enhancement - Includes a convenient graphical front-end for the bbjcpl, pro5cpl and bbx4cpl business BASIC compilers. Any errors found during the compiling process display as hyperlinks. Double-clicking on a hyperlink opens the original source file and highlights the line containing the error.
  2. BBjCommandLineObject - Provides object-oriented access to the BBj command line, expanding capabilities beyond the traditional SCALL.
  3. BBjDataSet - Associates record oriented channels with GUI controls. The BBjDataSet provides methods that allow the BBj program to move through the records found in the associated data source. GUI controls bound to the BBjDataSet and to the controls automatically update when traversing the record set.
  4. BBjInputD - Provides methods for manipulating a date control that allows calendarized date picking, date masking, and regional formatting capabilities.
  5. BBjMDIBorder - Enables the docking of MDI client windows to the north, south, east, and west borders on a multiple document interface application.
  6. BBjPrintObject - Expands the printing capability of the language by allowing the construction of print jobs using object-oriented methodology.
  7. Demo License Registration - Offers automatic registration for downloading and installing a demo license in one simple step.

For additional details on these and other upcoming features, go to the index in the BBj 3.02 documentation and type BBj 4 or login to the BBj-Developer newsgroup and become a part of the creative development process. We hope you enjoy being a part of this innovative process. We appreciate your feedback and know that the language benefits from your contributions.
