BASIS International Ltd. announces the release of BBj® 4.0, the latest version of Business BASIC written in Java.
Listed below is a summary of the new features and functionality of Business BASIC available in BBj 4.0:
Security - Includes these new features:
- Client/Server Communication Encryption - Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption of communication between the
interpreter and the data server.
- Socket Level Encryption - SSL encryption is now available for all socket communication.
- Field Level Encryption - Choice of encryption algorithms to encrypt individual fields in a file.
- File Level Encryption - Choice of encryption algorithms to encrypt an entire file.
Migration - Provides both BASIS products, BBj and (V)PRO/5, with direct connection to the BBj database, giving
customers the ability to deploy the traditional interpreter with an innovative java-powered database. This extends the
product co-existence benefits available in the previous release, which enabled the products to share the same license file
and user counts.
BASIS IDE - Includes two new features; a file module and a data dictionary module. The file module provides a
graphical view of the file header and keys, and a file record view in both hexadecimal and ASCII format. The data dictionary
module contains all of the features formerly available in DDBuilder® and Enterprise Manager, plus many new functions. Also
included is a convenient graphical front-end for the bbjcpl, pro5cpl and bbx4cpl business BASIC compilers. The BASIS IDE now
serves as the development dashboard for all Business BASIC projects. Any errors found during the compiling process display as
hyperlinks to the source code. Double-clicking on a hyperlink opens the original source file for editing and positions the
file on the highlighted line containing the error.
Popup Menu - Allows global use across all controls in a program, giving developers the ability to develop a common
popup menu only once and reuse it as often as needed.
Automatic License Updates - Provides developers with the ability to update programmatically the license running on the
computer hosting the BASIS License Manager (BLM). This facilitates the software rental model by minimizing customer
interaction.
Silent Installation - Facilitates an automated installation process, requiring no user interaction. Developers can
automate and consolidate BASIS software with their application installation. This feature gives the developer greater control
of the installation resulting in a more dependable installation process.
BBjCommandLineObject - Provides object-oriented access to the BBj command line, while expanding the language's system
call capabilities beyond those of the traditional SCALL function.
BBjRecordSet - Associates record oriented channels with GUI controls. The BBjRecordSet provides methods that allow the
BBj program to move through the records found in the associated data source. GUI controls bound to the BBjRecordSet
automatically update when traversing the record set.
BBjInputD - Provides methods for manipulating a date control that allows calendarized date picking, date masking, and
regional formatting capabilities.
BBjMDIBorder - Enables the docking of MDI client windows to the north, south, east, and west borders on a multiple
document interface application.
BBjForm - Significantly expands the printing capability of the language by allowing the construction of print jobs
using object-oriented methodology to deliver printed form design capabilities.
Demo License Registration - Offers automatic registration for downloading and installing a demo license in one simple
step.
